When is a five-speed gearbox a four-speed?

I like to think I'm quite creative but a small issue had me laughing recently about the strange ways dealers had got around gearbox issues in the past and that their customers believed them. We're obviously going decades back and I don't believe anyone would fall for them today - or I really hope they wouldn't. The problem was a sticky issue on a Renault gearbox that wouldn't go into fifth anymore. One colleague joked about how the easiest way to fix it would have been to change the gear knob instead from five-speed to four-speed.
