In the good old days, automatic gearboxes were quite simple: three speeds (four on Mercedes-Benzes and some BMWs), no electronics and very definite changes up and down the gears. BMW went to five speeds with the ZF 5HP range in 1991 and then six speeds with the introduction of the E65 7- Series and ZF 6HP range in late 2001. The ZF 6HP was later used on cars such as the Jaguar S-TYPE and the BMW 5-Series - like our car - from 2003.
