RIO MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP

Bought a Kia Rio 1500 double overhead cam with 130,000 miles on the clock as a cheap runabout for my daughter and it has been owned for three years. When I purchased it there was little service history, although it has run well and passed on emissions at every MoT easily. Last week, the MIL light came on, showing 'P0171, fuel system lean and problem started'. Now the car starts every time, but will not idle.
