The dream of a new canal linking the Great Ouse at Bedford to the Grand Union Canal in Milton Keynes is no longer just a dream: construction work has begun on the first of the structures that will one day carry the 16-mile waterway.rnThe bridge that will take the improved A421 main road over the navigation near Stewartby Lake is now well underway, with completion expected this autumn. At a reception to mark the start of physical work on the scheme, Mid-Bedfordshire MP Nadine Dorries described getting the waterway included in the road scheme as "an amazing job" which showed how much support there was for the scheme.
