There's something intriguing about the days of sail, a point Julian Stockwin has picked up perfectly with this book. The author of the popular Thomas Kydd naval fiction series, his Miscellany, as the name suggests, is a wonderful mix of true facts, sea tales and historical information which brings to life the lives and times of those on board ships under sail. It's arnmixed bag of information and entertainment and wherever you dip into it there's something to discover: for instance, 'touch and go' is derived from a sailing vessel touching the ground and then lifting off again quickly, thus avoiding disaster by a narrow margin (so now you know for next time on the Llangollen).
