This year it's 40 years since restoration work began on the Montgomery Canal, and a major work party is planned for this autumn to commemorate the anniversary. The Welshpool Big Dig in 1969,rnorganised in the face of threats to obliterate the canal for a bypass through the town, marked the start of work to reopen the Welsh border waterway. Since then, long sections have been returned to use, and more than half of the canal is now open. Current work is concentrated on extending the navigable Englishrnlength from Gronwen towards the Welsh border at Llanymynech. And on 17-18 October organisations involved in the restoration, including the Shropshire Union Canal Society, IWA and WRG, will combine their efforts in a commemorative dig to give the scheme a further boost.
