Claverton Pumping Station

The waterwheel-powered Pumping Station at Claverton was completed in 1813 to supply water to the Limpley Stoke valley length and replace the thousands of gallons of water lost down the six (formerly seven) locks at Bath, because the water supplies from the feeders then in use were not sufficient to meet the lockage requirements. It was capablernof raising up to 100,000 gallons an hour from the River Avon into the canal 47ft above, and operated continuously until 1952 when it became derelict and the job was taken over by electric pumps in the 1980s.
