River power could generate electricity for 40,000 homes within three years, thanks to a new partnership between British Waterways and The Small Hydro Company Ltd.rnThe plan is to install underwater turbines alongside river weirs which will not affect navigation. The proposals aim to enhance waterway biodiversity as well as improving flood mitigation.rnAccording to British Waterways the ￡120m project funded by private investment, will generate 210,000 megawatt hours ofrnrenewable energy a year, saving 110,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
