The duchess of cornwall officially declared Double Bridge on the Wilts & Berks Canal open, at a ceremony that marked the completion of a three-year volunteer restoration which rescued the bridge from a state of near-collapse.rnThe bridge is twice as wide as normal farm crossings on the canal, which is explained by it having been on the boundary of two estates, each of which had to keep to its own side of the bridge. This explains the name, and the traces of a wall down the centre discovered during restoration.rnHer Royal Highness, Patron of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust, cut a ribbon across the canal allowing the first boats for a century to pass through.
