Chesterfield canal trust's appeal for £300,000 to build a brand new lock got off tc a flying start with £900 raised at the Kiveton Park IWA Campaign Festival and £800 donated by Retford & Worksop Boat Club.rnLocated just beyond the limit of the five-mile isolated restored length of canal from Chesterfield to Staveley, the new Staveley Town Lock is necessary for two reasons. Firstly it will compensate for coal-mining subsidence which has affected the levels since the canal closed, and secondly it will allow sufficient headroom under the new bridge needed where the route is crossed by a freight railway line.
