Conceived as a route from near Wigan to Kendal, the Lancaster Canal as built consisted of a main line from Preston to Kendal, a branch to the sea at Glasson, and a separate southern length later sold to the Leeds & Liverpool. Although not linked to the national network otherrnthan by a tramway, the canal carried a reasonable local traffic lasting into the 1940s. A 1955 Act authorised the abandonment of the canal, it was drained from Stainton to Kendal, and lengths in Kendal and Preston infilled. However other sections were starting to become popular withrnpleasure craft. Sadly this did not stop the M6 motorway from cutting off the 14 miles north of Tewitfield in the late 1960s, making the work of recently formed Association for the Restoration of the Lancaster Canal (now the Lancaster Canal Trust) so much more difficult.
