Easy living on difficult canal

Steve haywood's ‘difficult canals' article has struck a chord. We tackled the Erewash Canal in late September as part of a trip around the East Midlands ring and were so pleased that we did. Yes, it is difficult: 15 locks - most of them quite deep, with heavy gates and paddles protected by awkward handcuff locks. It is largely an urban canal - so think about the day and date of travel.
