Turning into or out of a marina or a junction on a canal is (relatively) easy. There is no current to deflect the boat and as long as the wind is okay it's pretty simple. But it's not always so on a river, judging by some of the letters we've received at Canal Boat recently. Take the River Thames for instance. These days you are likely to see many narrowboats cruising up or down as well as the usual river cruisers. Most marinas on the Thames and the arms leading into them from the main channel were built for motor cruisers which, although wider than a narrowboat, are nowhere near as long.
