After 16 years of blasting through Pennine rock, the three-mile Standedge Tunnel was finally opened on 4 April 1811, completing the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Two centuries later, British Waterways is looking for a volunteer to organise events to mark the bicentenary of what remains the longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel ever built in Britain. The anniversary is planned for 2-3 April as part of a year of celebrations. In line with BW's stated aim of involving more volunteers in the waterways as it prepares to hand over to the new waterways charity a year later, it is looking to recruit a volunteer to help co-ordinate a programme of major events "to bring the canal and tunnel to life".
