The large river lock at Diglis on the Severn is seen drained for the first time in two decades for maintenance in early autumn, when it opened to the public in the first of a series of open days across the network. Although winter maintenance brings inconvenience for some, the works will also be the opportunity to see parts of the canals you can't normally see, and learn more about the skills needed to keep the waterways operational.
