I've never owned a boat, but for a week at a time (or even a day at a time) I've 'owned' my own boat. Yes, I'm a 'serial hirer', and proud of it. I first became interested in canals because of the little red doors in some Birmingham road bridges. 'What does that little red door do, Daddy?' 'It lets the firemen pump water out of the canal.'
