The 'devil' with wings

Like flying anchors, swifts have greater mastery of the air than any other bird. A symbol of high summer, they return to Britain from Africa in early May and only stay until early August, enjoying the time of high insect population and long hours of daylight. Often confused with swallows and martins, they actually come from a separate order and their closest living relatives are now thought to be the New World hummingbirds.
