An eight-lock flight on the abandoned southern length of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canals is to be restored thanks to £854,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. What we now know as the 'Mon & Brec' is an amalgam of two canals. The Brecknock & Abergavenny, which follows a relatively level course along the valley side with just six locks from Brecon down to Pontymoile, was restored and reopened 40 years ago and is a popular cruising route. At Pontymoile, it joined the Monmouthshire Canal which descended steeply through 30 locks to Newport, where it joined the equally heavily-locked Crumlin Arm. These lengths have fared less well, with many locks demolished, and new roads blocking the canal.
