Q I have a 57ft narrowboat fitted with an Indian-built three-cylinder Greaves, a Ruston Hornsby design. The engine has only done 20 hours since new. At the low revs needed to keep the speed right, the exhaust is very smoky. I have to use a low exhaust on the Oxford because there are lots of low bridges and it's not much fun steering in a blue haze. If the revs are increased over the 700rpm cruising speed, the exhaust clears. I have read that blue smoke is oil burning, will this improve as the engine beds-in or is there a fix? The oil temperature stays low, less than 50C, and the water is around 80C, so is it running a bit cold?
