Back in action, 40 years on

Forty Years After the Ashtac major working party at Dukinfield Junction launched the restoration of the Cheshire Ring, more than 100 volunteers returned to the site to mark the anniversary by hauling out junk, tidying towpaths and clearing vegetation in what promises to be the start of regular clean-ups in the area. The event was organised by Manchester IWA with support from the Canal & River Trust and Waterway Recovery Group's North West regional group, a number of whom were among the 1,000 volunteers at the original 1972 event. They included David 'Mr Mac' McCarthy, who kept the volunteers supplied with tea and coffee just as he did four decades ago.
