Temperamental fridge

Q I have a 42ft boat on the River Nene. It came equipped with a 12-volt fridge but I can only get it to run smoothly - not stalling and what I call 'hunting' for power - when I run the engine. My two 110Ah leisure batteries were new this year. I had hoped they would solve the problem, but they haven't. However, the lights are always bright and the shower and water pumps run well. On a good run the fridge gets cold and even makes ice in the ice compartment. But soon after the engine goes off it begins to squeak, shudder on and off and 'hunt' for power. Sometimes it will run quite smoothly until a tap is turned on.
