Dutton: CRT faces the questions

A Heavy rain soaked into the sandy ground, coming down from the valley side above the canal, permeating underneath the channel and saturating the embankment on the downhill side. It got so wet that it turned to a slurry, and gave way. It may have been a tree blowing down and pulling its roots out that triggered the collapse, but that wasn't the basic cause - if the ground had been solid, the tree wouldn't have pulled out. Up to then the channel was intact, but once the bank gave way it failed, and water poured through the gap, washing away the bank and the canal bed in both directions.
