Cleanup goes west

There's a subtle change to plans for the annual BCN Cleanup volunteer working party this year - it won't actually be on the Birmingham Canal Navigations at all! But despite this, the organisers hope that it will still fulfil its usual function of helping to keep the waterways of the West Midlands rubbish-free. Having mainly concentrated on the less-frequented routes of the northern BCN - such as the Walsall, Tame Valley and Wyrley & Essington (pictured) - in recent years, for 2013 the Cleanup shifts westwards to the Stourbridge Canal. Never historically part of the BCN, the Stourbridge is closely connected as one of the main routes onto the system via Delph, the Dudley Canal and Netherton Tunnel. Volunteers will be throwing their grappling hooks into the Stourbridge main line above Sixteen Locks and the dead-end Fens Branch which leads to an attractive but underused mooring site.
