￡3m to repair Devon breach

The breach which washed away part of an embankment on the Grand Western Canal in November is to be repaired in time for a 2014 trailboat event, thanks to ￡3m of funding approved by the canal's owners Devon County Council. The isolated 11 -mile canal, open for trailboats, portable craft and a horse-drawn trip-boat based at Tiverton, wa< dammed off for a mile (splitting it into four-mile and six-mile lengths) after unprecedented rainfall led to the cana overtopping and washing away one side of the 60ft high embankment near Halberton. Some feared that it would be difficult to justify repair costs at a time when local authority money is tight.
