In addition to the usual attractions, this year visitors to the Chesterfield Canal Trust's annual trailboat rally and festival at Staveley Town Basin had the unusual opportunity to watch a brand new lock being built right next to the site. The Trust's volunteers, supported by Waterway Recovery Group, are making good progress on Staveley Town Lock. This will lower the canal to enable it to pass under a railway in the next step of extending the isolated five-mile Staveley to Chesterfield restored length - and ultimately re-linking it to the navigable network.
