Canal Boat Reader Austin Allen sent in this picture he took of a hire boat that came to grief (fortunately with nobody injured) at Lock 11 on the Widcombe Flight on the Kennet & Avon Canal in Bath. He felt that it was a "gentle reminder of what can happen when you don't steer clear of a lock cill". As we went to press, the lock flight was still closed while the Canal & River Trust attempted to recover the 49ft narrowboat. Having rejected the idea of bringing in a pair of cranes following concerns about whether the towpath would support the weight of cranes plus boat, an alternative method involving attaching floats to the boat and using a smaller crane was looking likely to succeed.
