Engineers working on North Lock on the River Soar were surprised to find seven safes among the debris in the bottom of the chamber when the lock was drained. Their haul from the lock near the centre of Leicester also included beer barrels, a small boat and a car engine - and enough junk in total that it an excavator had to be brought in at a cost of £10,000. Unfortunately (if not surprisingly), all the safes appeared to have already been emptied before being dumped.
