In 1969 a bridge over an abandoned canal in Gloucestershire was the scene of a one-woman campaign to fight off demolition. And 46 years later, the same bridge will be the scene for a ceremony to launch a bid to reopen the canal and link the Cotswold Canals to the national network in five years. With the restoration of the six-mile isolated Phase 1a length of the Stroudwater and Thames & Severn canals from Stonehouse through Stroud to near Brimscombe nearing completion, the Cotswold Canals Trust is launching a bid for £15m from the Heritage Lottery to reopen the all-important four-mile Phase 1b 'missing link' from Stonehouse to Saul, junction with the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal.
