CRICK BOATS

Surely the most eye-catching boat at the show. The owner liked the look of unconverted working boats with cloths over the hold, so has had a boat built in that style. The shell is by Mel Davis and looks fantastic, with fine shapes and smooth finishes. Under the cloths are windows rather than solid sides, so when the cloths are rolled up, the boat is flooded with light. And if the exterior is something special, then the interior matches it. Jim Birch, formerly Oakcraft Narrowboats, specialises in using reclaimed timber and this boat features the backs of old church pews under the gunwales. The lockers in the well deck (which, by the way, can be converted into a bed) are made from the floor of an old pub. The curved beams in the hold section are works of art.
