While the north of England sees a cross-country route shut throughout the winter season as a result of an unscheduled stoppage (see above), at the opposite end of the network in the south of England a proposed all-winter stoppage on the east-west Kennet & Avon route has now been greatly reduced in length. Although the stoppage notice puts the blame for the rescheduling of work on the effects of Covid-19, CRT's Richard Parry told Canal Boat that this was, in fact, only very indirectly the case. The work planned was part of a major improvement scheme to the canal's water supply involving pumps at Crofton (the modern electric pump, not the historic steam pumping station) and Wootton Rivers, as well as more conventional work on Bridge 109 at Wootton Rivers and Lock 67 at Little Bedwyn-and the plan was for a single closure covering all of this work and shutting the canal from November through to March.
