£45m winter works launched

Despite a 10 percent reduction in its income for the year, the Canal & River Trust has prioritised available cash on keeping a full winter maintenance and repair programme going, carrying out £45.1m worth of work on 50 waterways across England and Wales - an increase from £43.6m in winter 2019-20. The drop of £20m in CRT's total budget is largely due to reductions in income resulting from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic; even when the £10m saved by furloughing staff earlier this year is taken into consideration it still leaves the Trust with reduced funds available, and the programme has been slightly trimmed back from what had originally been planned.
