NICHOLSON BY NUMBERS

In the context of the Nicholson Waterways Guides reaching their 50th year of publication, I was recently asked a couple of searching statistical questions. Now this is not the usual approach I've met with in the past, from casual enquirers intrigued by learning how I earn an honest crust… and it set me thinking! A quick (well actually it took me most of the morning) look at the 62 individual waterways covered by the seven guides elicited the fact that there are around 1,818 locks along the 2,326 miles of navigations that the books embrace. So, not so far off an average of one lock per mile (0.78 to be precise).
