If you want to see how boating was done on the Chesterfield Canal in working days, get along to Worksop for one of a series of Sunday demonstrations of horseboating in late summer and early autumn. The events feature Down Rose, the accurate replica of the distinctive narrowboats (sometimes known as 'cuckoo boats') which plied the canal until freight traffic ended in the1950s. And like the Chesterfield boats from those working days, which relied entirely on horse-haulage right to the end, Down Rose is unpowered. So Charlie the horse (who featured in a Countryfile broadcast in May) has been in training for many months ready to take up the reins.
