As I sat inside eating my supper, an English variant of patatas bravas, the guy in the boat lopposite, on the other side of the canal in the middle of Banbury, pourec a large measuring jug of suspicious looking fluid into the canal. He then handed the jug to a younger crew member who loitered within the semi-trad enclosure of their boat. Looking down occasionally and peering around furtively, after a while he too poured the now three-quarters full measuring jug into the canal. I learned four things from this episode: 1) Assuming the boat's sanitary facilities were out of commission, these blokes couldn't be bothered to find public toilets, even though there are several ir Banbury and some less than 100 yards from where they were moored. 2) The semi-trad stern of this type of design of narrowboat makes a very-good pissoir - (our French cousins will, I'm sure, approve).
