Five rivers are born on the slopes of Plynlimon, the 2500ft mountain towering over Aberystwyth and the Welsh coast. The best-known is the Severn ― but remarkably just a mile away is the source of the River Wye. As it carves its way through mid-Wales and the Marches, the Wye's setting becomes ever more dramatic, the river itself broader and deeper. By Hay-on-Wye, it is wide enough for navigation. Historic Hereford, Ross, and the great rocky outcrop of Symonds Yat follow; then Monmouth and the ruins of Tintern Abbey, where the river becomes tidal. By the time it passes Chepstow Castle, 150 miles from Plynlimon, the tidal rise and fall is an astonishing 50ft. Three miles later, the Wye and Severn meet at last.
