摘要

Conceived as a north-south route from the Mersey via Chester to the Severn at Shrewsbury, the Ellesmere Canal (as it was originally called) was planned to run roughly south-westwards on the west side of the River Dee from Chester, then to turn and run in a general southeasterly direction to Shrewsbury. The centre section involved crossing the deep Dee and Ceiriog valleys - as well as the higher ground in between. Inevitably this would make for tricky engineering -whether it was high aqueducts, long tunnels, or multiple lock flights with complex water supply issues.
