Birmingham has always been at the heart of the canal network but nowhere on the system has seen more changes in recent years than the section through the city centre between the Worcester & Birmingham turn, now called the Mailbox, and Old Turn Junction by the National Indoor Arena. We set out on the second stage of the Stourport Ring from Gas Street Basin, where canal afficionados mourn the loss of the enclosed basin whose crumbling warehouses have been demolished and replaced by a new pub and housing. The basin still has its boats and moorings but has now been opened up on one side to public gaze, overlooked by the jarring glass monolith of the Hyatt Hotel.
