Abandoned, condemned as a danger and an eyesore, and largely buried under the M8 motorway, the Monkland Canal does not seem like much of a success story today. But at one time it was the most profitable canal in Scotland Although the best-known Scottish canals are probably the great coast-to-coast routes, neither the Caledonian nor the Forth & Clyde made a vast profit for the people who had put up the money for their construction. The much less well-known Monkland Canal boasts the title of Scotland's most financially successful waterway, as well as several other Scottish claims to fame - it had the country's only inclined plane, its highest summit, and probably more branches than the rest of Scotland's canals put together. Sadly, it has probably also had more money spent on obliterating it than any other Scottish canal.
