Scouting the Shannon

The source of the River Shannon is at Shannon Pot, in the hills surrounding Lough Allen. We joined it rather further downstream as we cruised narrowboat Earnest down the Shannon-Erne Waterway and entered the river near Battlebridge. For many years this would have been almost the head of navigation. But thanks to the reopening of the Lough Allen Canal, abandoned in the 1920s when Lough Allen was used as a compensating reservoir for the Ardacrusha Power Station many miles downstream, we could turn right and head for the headwarters of the Shannon.
