Like barcode shipment labeling and EDI (electronic data interchange), compliance EPC/RFID (Electronic Product Code/Radio Frequency-based Identification) tagging initiatives will bring lasting changes to today's business. Opportunity and risk accompany any change, and each must be considered when planning a successful implementation strategy. The goals and processes that a company creates for managing EPC/RFID adoption will in large part determine if it drives the change, or is driven by it. The opportunities that EPC/RFID adoption creates are abundant: reduced storage, handling and distribution expenses; increased sales through reduced stock-outs and reduced product shrinkage; and improved cash-flow through increased inventory turns and better asset utilization.
