ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY OF DAIRY FARMING

In this age of environmental awareness and concern, when we are faced with environmental accountability, we often look to the "major pollutants": car exhaust, factory emissions and chemical dumping as the culprits for today's environmental problems. However, home owners, small businesses and family farms all contribute to the waste that is contaminating rivers, lakes, and beaches. These facts were uncovered in an interview with Doug Hocking, CURB co-ordinator with the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority. Clean Up Rural Beaches (CURB) was a 57 million dollar program (including administration and grants) funded by the Ontario government. The successful program which began on September 1, 1991 was initially scheduled to end on August 31, 2001. With recent provincial cut-backs, the program will now end in March of 1996.
