I am pleased to respond to the valuable comments providednby the discusser. I completely agree that the criticalncondition under an active case caused by the vertical earthquakenforce (Qv) generally occurs when the force acts in anvertically downward direction for lower values of the horizontalnearthquake acceleration coefficient ah, whereas thenreverse direction of Qv generally satisfies the critical conditionnfor higher values of ah.
