Surely, software communicated for years with other software without the benefit of IAI, IFCs, XML, or ODBC. One vendor simply programmed hooks into another vendor's software via an applications programming interface (API). Revit has no API. Pre-acquisition, the [Early Revit] company strongly implied it never would have an API; post-acquisition, Autodesk has discussed the possibility of some kind of API to certain unspecified applications, but has not announced any specific roadmap for doing so.
