Donald G. Fisher, chairman of Gap Inc., was seen dropping out of the bidding for a painting by the New York artist Chuck Close once it topped $1 million. Scott Black, a respected collector of Impressionist-era art, didn't make any major purchases at auction this fall. Neither did Eli Broad, ceo of SunAmerica Inc. in Century City, Calif., and another renowned collector. "We bid on several things," Broad says, "but the price went way beyond what we were willing to pay."
