Is Stimulus Enough?

Ben Bernanke briefly spooked investors on Jan. 13 by saying that while he approves of Barack Obama's move to tap the remaining $350 billion in federal bailout money, fiscal stimulus alone won't do the trick. Bernanke opined that lots of cash should also be spent on one of the bailout's original purposes, the purchase of troubled assets from banks, and to help homeowners escape foreclosure. Obama on Jan. 12 gave up an effort to sweeten his stimulus package for businesses and Republicans, dropping a tax break of $3,000 for every job created or saved.
