Sony has long symbolized cutting-edge Japanese technology, but these days it's looking like a leading indicator of what ails the country's tech titans. On Jan. 1 the Nikkei business newspaper said Sony could report its first annual operating loss in 14 years, estimated at $1.1 billion. Later that day, Nikkei said Toshiba would also likely lose money. Goldman Sachs agrees, pointing to Toshiba's growing stockpile of unsold PCs in Europe .
