Arizona-based course designer Lee Schmidt won Architect of the Year honors from Golf Magazine in 2011 based on his success-in China. In an interview, Schmidt described a client of his, a Chinese businessman then in his second full year as a golfer. "Two months after he took up golf he challenged a friend to a money match," recalled Schmidt. "The friend had been playing for years and won easily. In the 19th hole, they made a rematch bet-for $10,000." Terms included a one-year wait, during which Schmidt's client could practice up. "A year later they had their rematch and my client won back his 10 grand. Now he's a member of five different country clubs and looking to build his own course," said Schmidt. "That gives you some glimpse into China's golf culture."
