Zhao Chunyu, general manager of Beijing ZRF Automotive Sales, remembers the days, a decade ago, when Chinese consumers were willing to pay as much as 100,000 yuan ($14,400) more than list price for an Audi A6L sedan. Today, he and his 300 colleagues at China's oldest full-service Audi dealership are struggling to boost sales, even with 15 percent to 20 percent discounts that translate into losses of 20,000 yuan to 30,000 yuan per car.
