Le Grand Hotel. L'invention du luxe hotelier, 1862-1972

Still a high-end hotel in Paris, the Grand Hotel had become a commonplace location for tourists because of the emergence of palaces. But it did epitomise the revolution of luxury and of international tourism in the second third of the nineteenth century and at the Belle Epoque, which gives sense to such a case study of business history. It thus takes place within the recent trend of the history of tourism and luxury, and fills an actual gap as an overall true 'history' of the Paris hotels is still missing beyond mere 'table books'. Despite the lack of archives before 1887 and after 1945 (besides the Board's ones), thanks to family documents and to the archives of the Paris administration, it succeeds in covering a large range of relevant topics.
