Reflecting on corporate scandals: the failure of ethical leadership

In this paper, the authors reflect on one of the many widely publicised financial scandals that have occurred in recent years - one that took place in the Irish banking sector. By examining the High Court Inspector's Report on National Irish Bank and the McCraken and Moriarty tribunals investigating political corruption in Ireland, they explore the failure of business ethics. They conclude that this failure derived from the preoccupation with individual material and symbolic success that is a reflection of the Enlightenment.
